Notable Woman Art Piece
For this mini project, we were put into small groups and given the name of a famous woman and the task of researching and making a designated product about them. My partner and I were told to make an art piece about Mary Musgrove. She had mixed English and Yamacraw ancestry, and was born under a different name, Coosaponakeesa. At seven years old, she was taken from her home in Coweta to Pomponne in South Carolina by her father. There, she was baptized and “taught the ways of Christianity.” After being baptized, she went by her new christian name, Mary. I dramatized her history and ancestry through her complexion, split down the middle. Her new upbringing would refer to her as a “Half breed” due to her heritage, so I included that in my art piece. The last thing I included was her original and given names on her collar.

As a mini project, I’m proud of how the art piece turned out. As a partnership, things could have been better. My partner didn’t advocate much for himself, and I took the reigns to much. When we were told that he needed to contribute more to the actual art piece, I asked him to do some things. First, I didn’t specify color enough, so the colors of the words “Half breed” and “Mixed blood” got switched up. After going over it with white out, I still think some things look messy. Second, when I asked him to outline some of the face, he did so sloppily, and with a green looking marker. I went over these again with a sharpie, but still some of the lines weren’t supposed to be outlined. I was frustrated with his contributions by the end, but from the beginning I should have given him more of a say.
